On Christmas Eve, at the Mass where I knew so many children of all ages would be present, I spoke about the Christmas Tree. One of the things I pointed out is that Christmas trees are usually covered with lights, and these are a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world. Now that the actual day of Christmas is past we are faced with the ever-present challenge of keeping that Light burning brightly. The world knows plenty of darknesses. We are surrounded by all sorts of tragedy and even evil in the form of violence. What is there to sustain us in hope and make the Light present? For myself, I return again and again to prayer. In the meeting with Christ, in my own pleas to Him, and in the silence of listening for the prompting of the Spirit, I find that the Light is indeed present. I am comforted by this and take my strength from it. May you also find strength in the Light that Jesus is! Happy New Year!
