Today’s Prayer – June 9
by Colleen Sisolak, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry
Gracious and Loving God, Your blessings upon us are bountiful! For these months we have felt the challenge of muting our gifts so to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our neighbors safe. Now that we are in Phase 2 of the reopening plan, we are able to do so much more, while still being responsible for safety and protection of those around us.
In the first reading today, 1Kings 17-7-16, Elijah was sent to Zarephath of Sidon to a widow who would provide for him food and water. This widow, only having a small amount of flour and oil, expects that after baking with the last of the ingredients, she and her son will die of starvation. Elijah tells her, “Do not be afraid.” Listening, she goes and bakes a small loaf for Elijah and then for her and her son. Her faith allowed her to use what little she had, to share it with others, and to still provide for a year. May we, too, be so faithful.
In today’s Gospel, You remind us to be the “salt of the earth”, the “light of the world.” You provide everything we need to live as people of Christ, serving others, using the gifts You have provided to make this world a stronger and better place. Open our eyes and our hearts to new ways to live the Gospel message, while still keeping safe. So many are fearful of new ways, new ideas, new thoughts, but in this time, we have no choice but to accept “new,” if we plan to build Your kingdom and share Your love.
Lord God, help us to be faithful, like the widow, that You will provide for us. Allow us to be the “salt of the earth,” and not allow us to lose our flavor and therefore “no longer be good for anything.” Give us the strength to be the “light of the world” and to have our “light shine before others, that they may see our good deeds and glorify (You) our heavenly Father.” May we put every gift and blessing to use in a way that builds up our world to love You, glorify You and desire to be with You in Your heavenly home!
