June 16 Daily Prayer & Update

Today’s Prayer – June 16

by Colleen Sisolak, Directory of Youth & Young Adult Ministry

Heavenly Father, Your mercy and justice reign throughout the readings today. You are so open to the repenting actions of Ahab, a man who murdered and took over the land of those whom he killed, yet upon his humbling himself before You, You choose to not bring evil upon him. We have not murdered, or stolen land, yet we are sinners, how much more love and mercy will You show us? We can only imagine.

In the Responsorial Psalm, 51, we refrain with “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” Simply acknowledging our sinfulness, You already show Your patience and grace. We are calling upon You to show us an undeserved and unearned mercy, and You do not disappoint!

The Gospel today is a great challenge, a lifelong struggle for so many. “Jesus said to his disciples: …I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:43-44. “Love your enemies.” This is a level of forgiveness that transcends our own ability. There is no way for us to “love our enemies” without Your interceding for us, without Your having already demonstrated that love in Your suffering on a Cross.

Similarly, “Pray for those who persecute you.” Someone speaking against what one knows to be true, what someone believes in the depths of their heart, and then praying for them anyway? This is a struggle that many choose to ignore, and instead wallow in the hurt and hate. But, again, You demonstrate over and over praying for those who persecuted You.

May we truly reflect upon the readings today and allow the challenges set before us to be just that, challenging. There is nothing You have tasked us with that You have not already provided us everything we need to meet that challenge. May the mercy You show to us be the example of mercy we, too, need to show. Give us the courage, patience, and love to be compassionate and merciful people, reflecting on the compassion and mercy we receive from You!

Amen.
